U6 coaches needed

U6 is for players that will or have turned 4 or 5 in the year 2024.

Here are some facts for those of you that are thinking about coaching your U6 player:

  • Teams are Coed at this age group

  • The game is played in 4 quarters. 7 minutes each with a short half time

  • The players switch ends of the field at half time

  • The game is played with 4 players from each team (no goalie)

  • The coach or assistant coach is on the field to keep play going, call throw-ins, encourage their players to make decisions and get the other players in and out to make sure everyone is having fun and getting at least half of the game

  • LOTS of goals are scored, we don’t keep score

  • FUN is more important than the score

  • As long as they are having fun and learning the beautiful game it’s a win

  • Don’t forget to assign a parent to bring snack for after the game

Practices for any age should mimic the game times. U6 practices one or two times a week for 30-40 minutes. Here are some ideas for coaching a practice:

  • Set your field up before the players arrive

  • Encourage players to bring a ball to every practice

  • U6 players wake up warmed up, they do not need to stretch

  • Remember that their attention span is shorter than they are

  • Keep the activities upbeat and fun

  • Emphasize the rules of the game by making sure you have a fun scrimmage at the end

  • Games like red light, green light are great for ball control and keeps them moving

  • Games like tag are great for ball control, shielding the ball, and avoiding pressure. Remember to have quick restarts so the player isn’t standing around too long

  • Avoid lines, and waiting for a turn if you can

  • Don’t forget water breaks, and extra breaks when it’s hot outside

  • Download the Mojo app for your phone and get great, age appropriate, practice plans

  • Contact our area manager, or the coaching coordinator if you have any questions

Ask your parents for help! You may find that you have lots of helpers that just want to be asked. Assign the end of year party, snack, etc. to various parents at your first practice. Have a meeting, introduce yourself, and have a signup sheet for what you need help with.
